Breaking Dawn

2025
Mixed Media, Acrylic on cardboard 41 × 49 in

Breaking Dawn is inspired by one of my favorite childhood memories. My cousins and I would wake before sunrise, slipping onto the porch as quietly as we could so we could play before our parents woke up. In those early morning hours, the world felt like it belonged to us. The streets were still, the air was cool, and every new day felt full of adventure waiting to unfold. The oversized racing helmet transforms the child into an explorer of possibility, while the Haitian peppers woven throughout the composition connect those memories to my heritage. The racing imagery becomes a metaphor for childhood itself—not a race against others, but the excitement of discovering the world one sunrise at a time. Breaking Dawn is a celebration of those fleeting moments when childhood felt completely free. It honors the quiet magic of dawn, when imagination awakened before the rest of the world, and the simple act of stepping onto the porch felt like crossing into a place where anything was possible.
